Building a Growth Mindset & It’s Importance

Personal growth is essential for health, happiness, and success. Every child has the potential to conquer new challenges they may face. There is nothing they cannot achieve if motivation and dedication are in their repertoire. Many people, children particularly, are heavily influenced by self-doubt or external social factors. This can hinder their own personal growth by refusing to act, low self-esteem or uncertainty of their own skills.

A personal growth mindset allows every person to accept new challenges and enthusiastically seek them out. It is easy for individuals to get in their own way, but most of us are blind to that. Once we understand that we are our own roadblock, only then can we overcome it. As parents, you can help your child recognize this and help to put them on the path to a better mindset. What’s important is an open mind, a supportive home, a desire to try new things, and an awareness that they can improve with commitment and effort.

As children grow older and enter competitive academic environments, complex social situations, and other new (scary) areas, they can easily become anxious and shy about accepting new challenges. They may worry about social judgement or begin to question themselves. This is a self-limiting attitude, but one which is difficult to recognize and shed without encouragement and support.

Individuals who possess a growth mindset are more likely to understand that perfection is not immediate and that working hard to improve is part of the process. It is an essential aspect of conquering challenges and seeing them as opportunities to learn. Hardship is inevitable; however, possessing this perspective fosters resiliency. The individual would better understand that finding difficulty in a task does not mean failure but rather a chance to improve. With a personal growth mindset, a child is readily able to face problems and, therefore, more likely to exhibit self-development.
